What is the Spirited Interior Design Trend?

The Spirited interior design trend stems from maximalism with the same bold approach, but it’s completely fueled by self-expression and daring elements, all while being executed subtly. We sat down with Tayla, Style Sourcebook’s Marketing and Community Coordinator, in our 2024 Interior Trends Forecast, who has noticed this trend continues to increase in upcoming mood board projects.

A certain striking element creates a focal point of the room, whether it be pendant lights, bold artworks, tile selections, or even a chair with a unique shape,” explains Tayla. “I’ve also noticed that within our Instagram community, there’s a distinct growing love for posts that feature striking details amongst contemporary, neutral spaces.” So, how exactly do you achieve the Spirited interior design trend?

Focal Points

As Tayla mentioned, bold elements establish a focal point for your space. They create drama and flair, without overwhelming the eyes or atmosphere. For example, we love how a gorgeous piece of art can pull attention, even if it isn’t the center of your space. To be able to do this, we recommend opting for a bold piece and adding smaller décor pieces in the same colour, pattern, or material to enhance it. This creates cohesion and flow but still allows for the artwork to be the focal point.

Bold Palettes

A bold palette doesn’t necessarily mean a hundred different vibrant colours all thrown together at once. A bold palette can consist of deep, rich tones, or even bright pastel colours. The trick is to find colours that fuse really well together. Try using the colour wheel as a tool to establish this, or even just sticking to a monochromatic scheme will still give you that spirited trend.

Adventurous Materials

An abundance of adventurous materials will really take your spirited interiors to the next level, especially when combined with a bold palette. Natural materials are the best place to start if you’re looking for an entry point into the ‘more is more’ trend. They also allow you to step outside of your comfort zone and become a little more daring. Think travertine coffee tables in bold colours, or large ceramic pots and vases with intricate designs, the options are endless. We also love some quality man-made materials that perfectly coincide with natural pieces, like a curved boucle sofa or stunning porcelain tiles.

Be Intentional with Your Pieces

Sometimes it's easy to get carried away with the excitement of maximalism. A good rule of thumb is to ensure every piece has a purpose. This purpose will look different for every room and person. It also doesn’t mean that each piece has to have a working function, the practicality of a piece can be to add a layer, add depth, enhance another more prominent piece, or even just add comfort or style. What’s important is that every piece, whether it be a fixture or furniture, makes you want to spend more time in that space.

Incorporate Patterns

Patterns are the perfect addition to your spirited interiors. These versatile elements can be found in so many different places in various colours, sizes, shapes and designs. This means they can be as bold or as subtle as you like, need we say more?

Personalise Your Space

As the spirited interior design trend is completely fueled by self-expression, as well as daring elements, it only makes sense to personalise your space. We love the addition of photo walls, décor from holidays, and even pieces you’ve collected over the years or family heirlooms. These items add so much character and wholesome chicness.

Interior design is the perfect avenue to take risks, experiment, and have fun, and we’re really going to see this come into play in 2024. So, now is the perfect time to really tap into that spirited interior design trend and bring a bit of boldness to your home.
