How to Embrace Patterns In Your Home

Patterns have always been a key element within interior design. And even though patterns have experienced their own changes throughout the decades, there’s no denying it's a much-loved element within the home. In saying this, trying to incorporate patterns can be a little daunting, especially with today’s current minimalist trends dominating the industry. But they’re such a fun way to bring energy and interest to your space. So, if you’re looking to embrace a little (or even a lot!) of pattern play into your home, then we’ve got you covered.

Patterns in Today’s Trends

In case you missed our 2024 Interior Trends Forecast, we’re predicting that Geometry Play will be a big part of this year's interiors. Style Sourcebook’s Marketing Manager, Emilee, gave us an insight into what this might look like when it comes to patterns.

“In 2024 we’re predicting to see a lot of interesting shapes, lines, and patterns take center stage in interior design,” says Emilee. “Using various geometric forms is a really interesting way to add character and visual interest to any interior space and is something we are seeing a lot of already from our design community.” Think rugs with bold patterns, geometrically patterned tiles, or even wallpaper. Tthere are numerous possibilities to create an edgy and intriguing space by playing with patterns.

How to Bring Patterns into Your Home

Consider Your Palette

The colour and tone of your patterns are just as important as the pattern itself. If you’re looking to make a bold statement with your pattern, then you might opt for something in a vibrant or moody hue that really captures the eye when someone walks into the room. Or if you’re using patterns to add an extra layer of depth or interest, we recommend opting for a muted tone, so you don’t overwhelm the space.

Patterned Rugs

Rugs are one of the easiest, most aesthetic ways to bring patterns into your home. They’re functional, aesthetically pleasing, and come in so many different shapes, colours, and sizes. Their versatility allows you the creative freedom to really add patterns in your own unique way that suits your home and your personal style. Need we say more?

Artwork

Artwork is another fantastic way to add patterns while expressing your own aesthetics. It’s also great for playing with patterns without committing to a permanent change. Artwork is fun, visually interesting, and works to complete your space, so, why not give a patterned print a go?

Patterned Tiles

If there’s one way to add a striking detail to your space, it’s through patterned tiles. We’re currently swooning over geometric wall tiles and mosaic tiles influenced by European trends. And like many other pattered elements, you can choose to either create a subtle chicness or a bold statement within your bathrooms and kitchen.

Patterned Flooring

Patterned flooring is an extensive category with no limitations. Patterned flooring ranges from the solutions you choose, such as tiles or vinyl, to the layout technique of your flooring, like herringbone or chevron. And the best part about patterned flooring is that it can either be striking, such as bold print, or subtle, like a rich, herringbone timber look.

Patterned Décor

Another simple, yet effective way to bring patterns into your home is through décor. Think patterned bedspreads, cushions, or even wallpaper, there’s something for every style of home. And don’t be afraid to mix patterns. Our only advice is to try to keep something in common between them, such as colour palette or pattern type. A good rule of thumb is to combine a large pattern with a smaller one and a geometric with an organic pattern.

Balance with Solids

To prevent your space from looking too busy, balance patterned pieces with solid colours. The solids will give the eye places to rest while also making the patterns stand out more.
