The Style Sourcebook 2024 Interior Design Trends Forecast
To end the year in style, we recently wrapped up the Interior Design Trends of 2023, which certainly set an exciting tone for the new year. But with 2024 around the corner, we’re forecasting the trends the interior design community will be loving next year. Think Refined Modernism, Spirited Interiors, Geometry Play, European Luxe, Australian aesthetics, and Balancing Layers. So, come with us as we explore these evolving trends and hear from our expert team on why they think state-of-the-art functionality, risk-taking interiors, and plenty of depth will be on the cards for 2024.
Refined Modernism
2023 brought us modern minimalism and natural connection, but how will this look in 2024? We’re predicting a complete fusion between both styles, with Refined Modernism being the result. Refined Modernism has the same aesthetics, palette, and materials as organic modern interior design, but with an extra emphasis on functionality. This means people will be prioritising products that work to enhance their lifestyle while keeping a muted, natural aesthetic.
Bethany, the Content Marketing Coordinator at Style Sourcebook, expects our design community will be opting for state-of-the-art functionality, warmer, neutral tones, and rich minimalism. “Refined Modernism aims to ground, while simultaneously creating a functional space. This doesn’t just mean incorporating practical products, but how you live and move around your home. We saw an increasing response to modern content that featured refined, yet natural influences. I think we’ll see an even better response throughout 2024.”
When aiming to achieve Refined Modernism, our advice is to focus on form, then palette and materials. Less really is more in this trend, so only opt for products that are going to fit in with your life. For example, there’s no point in having a full coffee station if you only use it when entertaining. But if you’re someone who reaches for coffee each morning, opt for a sleek, simple machine in a neutral tone that matches its surroundings.

Geometry Play
Interior trends over the past few years have really been building up to the Geometry Play trend. We’ve seen a rise in the juxtaposition of different shapes being used in an interior to create a sense of fun and character. Lines, points, shapes, angles, and forms are all elements that we think will be highlighted throughout homes in 2024. Geometric patterns can be incorporated in many different aspects of interior design. Whether that be a geometrically patterned tile or a round-legged coffee table, there are numerous possibilities to create an edgy and intriguing space by playing with geometry.
“In 2024 we’re predicting to see a lot of interesting shapes, lines, and patterns take center stage in interior design,” says Emilee, Style Sourcebook’s Marketing Manager. “Using various geometric forms is a really interesting way to add character and visual interest to any interior space and is something we are seeing a lot of already from our design community.” Think rugs with bold lines and patterns, curved furniture, organic-shaped ceramics, and decor pieces are all making a comeback and will be seen a lot in interior design in 2024.

European Luxe
Europe is (and let’s be honest, always will be) a popular source of inspiration. You can’t go wrong with rich culture, remarkable architecture, renowned artists, the list goes on. And if you haven’t been lucky enough to embrace the Mediterranean coastline lately, then we have the next best thing. We’re predicting European influences will be found everywhere in 2024, and they will be the epitome of luxe. Think opulent palettes, striking marble, coloured glass, and sculptural elements. We might even see the classic coastal trend switch into more a relaxed modern Mediterranean style as the year goes on.
Bethany believes these rich characteristics will be utilised to create a ‘holiday at home’ feel, with a traditional Italian or Greek Twist. “We’ve seen the ‘holiday at home’ theme play out with influences from Bali, so I really think this year it’s Europe’s turn. Our content has strongly reflected that people are still very invested in turning their home into a sanctuary, which certainly hasn’t faded after Covid. But it’ll be exciting to see how people lean into the luxurious touches of Europe within their spaces.”

Australiana
If you needed any indication that natural connection isn’t going anywhere for 2024, look no further. We’re predicting that ‘Australiana’ will be a much-loved trend over the next year, and it’s easy to see why. This style brings grounded tones, earthy characters, and natural elements into your space - it's an ideal trend for bringing the outdoors in. Australiana focuses more on the tones and textures of a space, rather than the shapes, lines, and layout. It’s laidback, calming, and perfect for creating a relaxing atmosphere.
“Recently we've noticed many mood boards with colour palettes and textures that reflect our scenic countryside. Gorgeous browns, rich reds, and warm greens have become so popular, as well as dusty pinks, sky blues, and pale yellows. We’ve seen a big increase in the use of these tones through tiles, armchairs, textured rugs, and even paint colours,” notes Tayla. “This palette lends itself well to the evolving Australiana style, with elements that remind us of the Australian landscape and just how special it is.”
If you want to bring a little bit of Australiana into your interiors, we recommend choosing a bold piece that is reminiscent of your favourite Australian spot. It might be a rust-coloured sofa that feels like the Outback, or a light pink artwork that reminds you of the sunset. The aim is to create a space that feels natural and grounded with a relaxed Australian atmosphere.

Layered Balance
We’ve touched on texture and the role it played within 2023 interior design trends; however, we believe that we’re going to see a whole different side to this in 2024. We’re predicting the use of texture will be elevated and used in more of a layering sense in 2024. Gone are the days of only incorporating two cushions on a sofa. To create a beautiful, functional, and timeless interior, layering with texture is an absolute must.
“Layering an interior with different textures is the secret to creating an Instagram-worthy space,” notes Emilee. “Whether it’s a bathroom and you’re adding different textures in through your tile selections, or a living room and you choose to bring in texture through various materials used in your furniture and decor pieces, mixing different textures is an absolute must when designing a swoon-worthy space.”
And Emilee’s top tip for creating texture? “The key to nailing this trend is to always include at least three different textures in every space. So, if you’re designing a living room then think about how you can include at least three different textures into the room. An example of this could be including linen sheer curtains paired with a boucle armchair and leather sofa. Or if you’re designing a bedroom space, make sure you include at least three different textures in your bed linen and coverings.”

Spirited
Interior design is the perfect avenue to take risks, experiment, and have fun, and we’re really going to see this come into play in 2024. Stemming from the notorious maximalism trend, the Spirited interior design trend will take the same bold approach, but it will be completely fueled by self-expression and daring elements, executed subtly. There will be one or two bolder elements complemented by minimal pieces.
Tayla, Style Sourcebook’s Marketing and Community Coordinator, has noticed this trend continues to increase in upcoming mood board projects. “A certain striking element creates a focal point of the room, whether it be pendant lights, bold artworks, tile selections, or even a chair with a unique shape. I’ve also noticed that within our Instagram community, there’s a distinct growing love for posts that feature striking details amongst contemporary, neutral spaces.”
