Style Sourcebook along with Choices Flooring and Oleander & Finch Interiors presents the Smart Choices Masterclass.

We’re diving into the third part of the Smart Choices Masterclass. In this series, we delve into the exciting world of flooring and discuss how to make smart flooring choices. Previously, we focused on making smart sustainability choices when it comes to building or renovating.

In this edition, we’ll be exploring tips and tricks for choosing the right rugs and window furnishings for your home. The wonderful Rhiannon Lee, from Oleander & Finch Interiors, talks us through what we should be looking for in rugs and window furnishings.

What should we look for when choosing a rug?

There can definitely be a bit of confusion when it comes to choosing the right rug, especially knowing what size and shape to pick. Rhiannon’s best advice is to go as large as you can, without touching the sides of the room. It's best to aim for furniture legs to be situated on top of the rug to help anchor the space. Considering the room you want to place a rug in will also help to determine the shape. For example, if you’re popping a rug under a circular dining table, then usually a circular rug will be the complementing option.

“Your rug is basically floor art. It’s what you’re putting on your floor to elevate the choices of flooring you have underneath but also to ground the space.”

- Rhiannon Lee | Oleander & Finch Interiors

What are your go-to tips for layering different flooring choices?

It might be a controversial tip, explains Rhiannon, but layering a rug on top of carpet can be an incredible option for your home. Think about your bedroom carpet, placing a rug underneath your bed not only gives the space depth but also gives you the opportunity to be bolder with colours and patterns without overwhelming the space. Layering rugs on hardwood flooring is also perfect for softening a space to make it feel warm and cosy. Plus, the rug will work to absorb sounds and echos that would usually bounce off these harder surfaces.

How does one choose the best window furnishings for their space and what’s the most versatile option?

Rhiannon’s advice is to first establish what the required outcome of your window furnishings is. For example, if you’re looking for a durable option for the kid's room, it’s best to go with a low-maintenance solution like roller blinds. Or maybe you want to increase your curb appeal so opting for plantation shutters can work to elevate your house.

But if you’re looking for a versatile option (and one of Rhiannon's favourite choices), then sheers are your go-to. They perfectly filter light and create a softness within your space, without any hassle. Plus, sheers can also be layered so if you want to add them to bedrooms, but still need to block out sunlight at various times, opt for sheers on top of other window furnishings.

We hope these tips and tricks will better assist you in choosing the right rugs and window furnishings for your home, Stay tuned for the fourth and final masterclass coming soon, but for now, if you want to explore the entire range of Choices Flooring rugs and window furnishings, visit here.
