Style Sourcebook Profile: Brickworks

Sustainable products and technologies are making waves within the interior design and building industry. Many people are taking notice of their home’s environmental factors from all aspects, right down to the foundations. Did you know that bricks can be reused, recycled and are known for their outstanding durability? They’re one of the most sustainable materials when it comes to the construction of your home. And if history has taught us one thing, it’s that bricks last over a lifetime (or even a few).

The topic of sustainability is an important one, so we wanted to chat with the experts at Brickworks to discover how you can build a durable home that will play an essential role within the environment and look good while doing so.

Carbon Neutral Bricks

Meet Australia’s first range of carbon neutral bricks. The Daniel Robertson range, from Brickworks, achieved carbon neutral certification by reducing emissions through efficiency improvements and by offsetting any remaining emissions.

Carbon neutral bricks are such a great option when building or renovating as it allows for your home to be more sustainable from the beginning and for the lifetime of your bricks.

Thinking of the Thermal Benefits

Not only are the elements of bricks durable and sustainable, but they also have incredible thermal benefits for your home. As bricks are a high-density product, they can effectively absorb and store heat energy. This helps keep your home cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter, minimising the need for heaters and air conditioning.

“A brick home is a sustainable and healthy home. Aside from their incredible durability and ongoing environmental benefits, brick homes also offer excellent thermal performance.”

- James Treble | Interior Designer, and host of Brickworks Tips & Tricks video series

Considering Your Climate

Taking into account your climate and location is a key factor in building a durable home. Your location may dictate sustainable elements that will best suit your home, such as building materials, layout, and additional requirements, like fire ratings. It’s also important to consider not just your block's location, but the orientation and position of your home. “A professionally designed north-facing home can take the edge off the summer heat and use the warm winter sunlight to provide a pleasant living space year-round,” says James Treble.

Incorporating Solar

In addition to your bricks, incorporating solar can be so beneficial for achieving a durable, sustainable home. It’s low maintenance, can reduce electricity costs, and is great for the environment. Need we say more?

Permeable Paving Solutions

If you’re looking to take your sustainability to the next level, then permeable paving might be for you. Permeable paving allows for water to flow through pavers and easily out to the drains or the ground below. This process supports stormwater systems, which means not only is your home a sustainable haven but you’re getting to help the wider community even further.

So there you have it, building a durable home with Brickworks that will not only look good, but make you feel good. View the entire range of Brickworks products here, or use our mood board tool to begin bringing your durable Brickworks project to life.
