If you’ve found yourself admiring a photo of a stunning interior design project on one of our Style Edits, your social media feed, or even in your favourite industry magazine, it might just have been shot by The Palm Co. Founded by Nat Spada, The Palm Co is a boutique creative studio based on the New South Wales South Coast. Known for their editorial style approach, The Palm Co’s amazing work takes them across Australia, styling and shooting beautiful projects we’re constantly in awe of.

But this time, we’re featuring The Palm Co’s renowned talent a little differently. We’re getting a look inside where the magic happens by touring Nat’s office, a renovated studio located just outside of her 1920s heritage-listed sandstone cottage. So, come with us as we explore the timeless details of the studio and even take a peek into their dreamy family home, Luck Cottage.

Nat, and her husband, Zach, purchased the property in December 2021. In addition to the original cottage, a structure had been added some years later to serve as both a garage and spare room. Nat was already in the process of finding a space to work out of, as she had outgrown her dining table set-up, so turning the structure into a home office studio became the perfect opportunity.

But the studio held the potential to be so much more than just a work-from-home zone. Nat wanted a retreat for herself as well as a guest bedroom when needed. She came up with the concept of combining the best of both worlds. But first, the original poorly built structure had to be knocked back to the slab. The studio was rebuilt with the same footprint and pitched roof structure but optimised for functionality and flow.

Now, the studio serves as an aesthetic office, with a study nook at one end, and a guest bedroom haven at the other. There was even room for the reformer Pilates machine, just to make it that much more perfect.

Having a multifunctional space that is also small, like the studio, can sometimes prove tricky when deciding on the interiors. But not for Nat. Leaning into her love of calm, minimal spaces, she opted for a Japandi influence for the overall look complete with light, tranquil interiors. Cue the custom floor-to-ceiling off-white curtains, a linen pendant, timber accents, and large double French doors - how dreamy. Nat also took a contrasting approach for the exterior and went with a statement black that is bold and striking, but completely works.

“I am forever grateful that I have this space to work from, and really proud of what we have achieved. For years I worked from my dining table and cafes all around, but it is so nice to have a beautiful space that I can call my own, I think it’s every creative’s dream to have a beautiful studio space they can work from and feel inspired.”

Taking a quick peek into Luck Cottage, the warm, inviting character is immediately evident. With curved detailing in the archways and island bench, antique brass cohesively featured in the tapware and lighting, and the original sandstone standing strong, Luck Cottage truly is a functional modern family home that pays tribute to its history. Like the studio, the influence of Japandi style can be felt throughout the home as it blends with the traditional details to create a perfect mix of old and new. The rich, organic palette of light greys, warm whites, deep walnuts, and strong greens works perfectly with the natural textures and sunlight that filters through.

When renovating Luck Cottage and the studio, Nat had a clear vision in her mind for how she wanted to space to not only look but also feel. Not a single detail was overlooked, including the incredible suppliers who were strategically chosen for their valuable elements.
