Stringers Sorrento; A Restored Modern Mediterranean Style Icon

If your Instagram feed is anything like ours right now, then it’s filled with swoon-worthy posts of friends and family holidaying in Europe. You might not be jetting off to the crystal-clear waters of Italy this year, but luckily, we have the next best thing. Come with us as we tour the iconic Stringers Sorrento. Originally built in 1896, Stringers has been thoughtfully restored and reimagined by the incredible Chris Connell Design and was shortlisted for the 2023 Australian Interior Design Awards (Hospitality Design). Boasting a luxurious modern Mediterranean style, a light-filled courtyard, plus an Italian-inspired deli, grocer, and menu, Stringers Sorrento is the complete experience.

So, with that being said, let’s explore the inspiring history, architecture, and elements that make Stringers Sorrento so iconic.

Located on a central corner block overlooking the bay, Stringers Sorrento has been a hub for locals and tourists since its opening over a century ago. The innovative renovation pays homage to the original structure of the landmark but has completely elevated the space for the modern-day visitor. With a focus on recompleteing the original limestone, the project aimed for the restoration to be a new chapter in Stringers' rich history, rather than compete with it. A full renovation of the ground floor was carried out, including the removal of previous works. This enabled the original structure to be emphasised while still forming a foundation for the new works.

Stringers Sorrento has become the perfect blend of old and new, creating continuity between the historical building and modern architecture. This integration can be found in abundance throughout the space, even aside from the iconic limestone features. Exaggerated beams define the unique zones of the restaurant and bar, the underground cellar still serves the area's best and rarest wines, plus, not to mention the classic goods from the providore.

“The immense weight of the existing building is expressed through the architecture showing its permanence and monumentality. The restoration and repair of the existing building was driven by the idea that the original structure should be revealed and emphasized in both its spatial context and materiality.”

Upon entering Stringers Sorrento, you’re immediately greeted by an expansive bar that resembles the hull of a ship. This strategic design not only feels cohesive with its location but acts as an anchor for the space. The layout was established to accommodate modern dining while also optimising the project's restoration focus.

You can't help but notice the cool, relaxed atmosphere created by the neutral palette and bright, airy spaces. The restaurant boasts with character, including custom-designed chairs and leather banquet-style seating. Clean lines and detailed joinery fill the gap in the existing structures, complementing the space. A wine wall to one side draws attention to the provedore, which is neatly tucked beside the restaurant. The organic curves of the bar allow for casual dining while also guiding guests to the idyllic courtyard.

Previously completely blocked off from the interior, the introduction of new full-height steel windows and doors leads out to the light-filled courtyard that immediately transports you to the Mediterranean. Yellow and white striped shades, a tall olive tree, bright whites, and the warm northern sun all play a reminiscent role of European summer.

And it wouldn’t be a restaurant tour without the mention of a menu inspired by seasonal Italian flavours and local produce. Think authentic wood fired Neapolitan pizza, freshly churned gelato, and a cocktail bar. We did say it was the complete experience!

The iconic Stringers Sorrento wouldn’t be the restaurant it is today without the incredible work of Chris Connell Design. The small Melbourne-based studio has been operating for over 34 years, guaranteeing extensive experience in the city’s architecture. Chris Connell holds a reputation for elegantly shaped interiors while striving for simplicity through clean lines and honest use of material. Stringers Sorrento is a sublime display of this reputation. For Chris Connell, the design process on each project begins with a simple, yet expressive sketch. We’re lucky enough to take a peek at these compelling drawings that give insight into where the modern-day Stringers Sorrento process began.

It also comes as no surprise that Chris Connell Design was shortlisted for the 2023 Australian Interior Design Awards (Hospitality Design) for Stringers Sorrento. The Australian Interior Design Awards celebrates interior design excellence via an industry-based program. This recognition of projects, such as Chris Connell Design, showcases the impressive work of both leading and emerging designers.
