Bringing the Maximalist Trend Into Your Home

Style Sourcebook Profile: Gallery Furniture

Meet Maximalism, the trend we’re sure you’ve seen everywhere lately, and for a good reason. It’s a style that has no boundaries and encourages you to indulge in the aesthetic of excess - think more is more. It gives you complete free reign to layer, and mix textures, patterns, and colours, adding anything you want. Sounds incredible, right? However, sometimes the expectation around maximalism means just adding more clutter to the space. This couldn’t be more wrong. It’s about combining designs and features to create character. We’re loving this trend right now and wanted to speak to the experts at Gallery Furniture to discover some tips on just how you can bring maximalism into your home.

Creating a Plan

Maximalism is the art of more, but like all other projects, you’ll still need a plan. Start with one room in the house, such as the lounge room. Identify the way you want to begin adding pieces, is it a bold new couch? Layered art? Or even just bringing extra décor to the space. Not only is this the perfect way to avoid clutter, but it also helps to introduce maximalism into the space in a strategic way.

Tip: If you’re needing a little inspiration for your plan, why not check out Australian designers, Anna Spiro Design and Greg Natale, who are known for their unique maximalist style.

Adding Interest

Adding interest into a maximalist space may sound simple, after all, there are no rules. But something you may want to keep in mind is the way you add interest. The aim is to bring in items that add energy to the room, not overwhelm it (or you for that matter). Try opting for one or two pieces that will set the mood of the room. This will also give the eye something to focus on. Another way to add interest is through depth, which can be achieved by layering. Think rugs on top of rugs, art on top of vibrantly painted walls or décor pieces placed on tables.

Tip: Pantone named Viva Magneta colour of the year, a powerful red that encourages self-expression – perfect for maximalism! We love the idea of styling this with bold, dark accents.

Think Luxury

Maximalism isn’t a modern trend, people have been indulging in interior excess for centuries. As it was often reserved for the wealthy, the association between luxury and maximalism was established. Fast forward to today, and luxurious maximalism can now be embraced by anyone. Characterised by ornate materials, intricate patterns, and an abundance of textures and colours, these items have a way of adding to the indulgent energy of the room. Think soft velvets, gold accents, and dramatic elements combined to create lavish spaces.
