2023 Interior Design Trends to Watch
2023 is well underway, can you believe it’s March already? With the Christmas rush over, the school holidays finished, and schedules being prioritised, we’re certainly into the swing of the year. Excitingly, this also means we’ve begun catching glimpses of the much-anticipated 2023 interior trends. You may have noticed the rise of bold statements, repurposed goods, natural connections, and an emphasis on individualism. Think bursts of colour, unique heirlooms, and of course, sustainability. This year is all about focusing on how trends can be expressed by you, and your lifestyle. So, come with us as we explore the 2023 interior trends worth watching.
Balancing Old and New
In 2023, we're repurposing vintage décor and combining it with contemporary spaces to balance old and new. Trends have a way of coming back around to be re-explored and revitalised, which is what we’re currently seeing. People are revisiting older trends to bring a sense of nostalgia into their homes, which creates comfort and warmth in a unique, quality way. These pieces have their own story to tell with the new generation being able to add their own chapter.
If you’re looking for a little style inspiration, why not check out the Coastal Grandmother style? This relaxed aesthetic channels softness in the home, but in an old-fashioned way. Think light-filled spaces with natural elements, such as wooden furniture and linen, and repurposed décors, such as books, antique vases, and baskets. Like Hamptons style, but made cosier with vintage pieces. The aim of this trend is to find inspiration in past styles and pieces while creating a balance with your current lifestyle.

Maximalism - a trend that is not only taking the interior design world by storm but also dividing it. Maximalism is sometimes associated with clutter and unbalanced spaces, but this couldn’t be more wrong. It’s a way to express yourself, your lifestyle, and the pieces you love. It encourages you to indulge and knows no boundaries, but that doesn’t mean just grouping together as many items as possible. This trend still needs to be mastered and may even be harder than its opponent, minimalism. We love maximalism for its eclectic elements. It blends colours, textures, patterns, and quality pieces to create an aesthetic space that can bring warmth and character. It also enables you to be expressive and if there is a trend that will never go out of vogue, it is expressing yourself through the art of interiors.
The idea of connecting your home to nature isn’t new. From the structural materials to the décor and everything in between, creating a natural connection has always been important. But in 2023, we’re loving the creative ways people are giving this trend new life. For example, Biophilic design, a term you may have come across recently, is the concept of bringing the outside in to better connect with nature. People are opting for designs that prioritise natural light, versatile indoor-outdoor living spaces, and elements like outdoor showers.
Natural décor is also occurring in unique ways around the home with bold statement-making features such as marble bench tops, raw materials, and the incorporation of various green tones.
Inspiration: We’re inspired by Oleander & Finch Interiors, who perfectly combine timeless designs with organic touches.
Structural Arches and Soft Curves
Flowing in from natural connection is structural arches and soft curves. We’re sure you’ve seen these everywhere right now, from doorways to sofas and mirrors. The organic roundness softens spaces and adds contrast that instantly captures the eye – need we say more? Like many of the trends in 2023, the best part is that curves work within every style and space. Plus, curves not only add visual interest but play a role in influencing your mood. Their smoothness replicates nature which helps to create calmness within the space.
A reoccurring factor in many of the 2023 trends is sustainability. From repurposing pieces to incorporating natural materials and opting for quality items, we’re sure to see an even further increase in sustainability. We love that more and more people are making purposeful choices when it comes to their homes, such as incorporating locally sourced, recycled, or low-impact elements. The aim of being environmentally conscious will always be a trend and encourages investment in quality pieces that can last a lifetime.
