Home & Design: @smout_property
As our Australian summer starts to draw to a close, we are holding onto the last few warm days by touring the dreamy ‘The Gables’ home designed by Becky and Francisco from Smout Property. The couple renovated the original Queenslander home into a family-friendly oasis that evokes both a luxurious and relaxed feel. The Palm Springs-inspired home draws from its surrounding summer atmosphere and fits right into the dreamy Queensland lifestyle. Open, light and transparent architecture combined with quality finishes, such as terrazzo and arebescato marble were used to create this unique and reimagined 1930’s Queenslander. So, make your favourite summertime cocktail and join us as we take you on a tour of this idyllic palm springs classic home, that might just make you want to move right on in!
Seasoned renovators and husband and wife duo Francisco and Becky design, build and sell boutique luxury homes in the inner-city suburbs of Brisbane. ‘The Gables’ in Ascot, is one of their latest projects to be completed. The Gables is a classic Queenslander that started with great bones but was unfortunately left in a state of despair for quite some time before the pair got their hands on it. Becky and Francisco had the opportunity to relocate the house on the allotment, extend and build in under the original home. This offered them a unique opportunity to incorporate a more modern, open-plan living underneath with the kitchen, living and dining flowing onto the yard, outdoor entertaining area and pool, all whilst maximizing the aspect to the northeast. The new side extension to the home now provides the main entrance, double heightened void, and connects to the newly created bedrooms and study. They also had the opportunity to build over the carport which provided a great terrace area to the upstairs living room.
“We love the downstairs kitchen/living/dining/bar space. It is the centre of the home and connects the inside/outside seamlessly with the yard and pool. It is framed by an 11m wide x 3m high corner opening stacker which stacks completely behind the external walls”.

As many of you would know, renovations are never easy and modernising a traditional Queenslander in 12 months is not without its challenges. Introducing modern services, for example, into a traditional home required significant thought and pre-planning. ‘The Gables’ home now strikes the balance between old and new seamlessly.
The Gables is undeniably captivating and provides us with all the radiant Palm Springs ambiance we could ever need. From the airy, open spaces and void, to the architecturally striking kitchen design, Smout Property has created a home that is refreshingly beautiful. It’s clear that a lot of love has gone into this property, and is one that our team here at Style Sourcebook will be inspired by for a long time to come.
