It’s not often that we feature a heritage home on Style Edit, but The Mill House is the ideal exception. Nestled in the small town of Manildra, NSW, this beautifully restored home is filled with natural light and endless amounts of character. With original features scattered throughout, it strikes the perfect balance between old and new, creating a warm and welcoming feel. Come with us as we unpack how this full-scale restoration came to life, including how interior designer, Holm & Wood, used Style Sourcebook mood boards within the design process.

The (original) Mill House was badly damaged in floods in November 2022. So, to bring it back to life and to its original glory, a full-scale restoration was very much needed. The original home was stuck in the 70's with small dark rooms and old furniture. The brief was to honour the heritage of the home but bring it back into the modern day. This involved opening up the old kitchen to create a brighter and more functional kitchen and dining space that promoted an open plan living situation.

“I wanted to showcase the original features of the home as much as possible and draw attention to these items.”

The kitchen, which is absolutely our favourite space in The Mill House, has a gorgeous Australian farmhouse and country style, combined with a hint of luxe with a Hamptons vibe. The kitchen is filled with classic-style furniture, timbers both new and retrieved from the original home, and features a to-die-for feature oven and cooktop (such a wow moment!). And there’s perhaps no sweeter than the overall soft colour palette. It certainly has us swooning!

There’s really nothing quite like a hallway archway. The Mill House hallway was created with a new steel and glass door, allowing the eye to continue down the hallway. This is mirrored in the archway as well. When looking up, we can’t help but notice the embossed heritage ceiling design, which is full of character.

To bring The Mill House from concept to fruition, Rachael from Holm & Wood utilised our mood board tool. Separated by room, the mood boards capture the essence of the home. Created during the initial concept phase of the design process, the mood boards helped to pull the ideas together easily and allowed the client to visualise each space and how they related to each other.

“I created Style Sourcebook mood boards for each individual room during my initial concept phase. They were extremely helpful in how the concept was briefed to client for approval.”

With its charming heritage details, combined with luxe moments, The Hill House is a standout home. If you’re feeling inspired, head to our mood board tool to bring your vision to life.
