Your Lighting Layers Guide
First things first, it's essential to understand lighting layers to ensure you’re incorporating new trends where they matter. There’s three basic types of lighting layers; ambient, task, and accent.
Ambient lighting has the role of being the primary source of illumination within a room. It typically comes from fixtures such as pendants.
Task lighting is designed to provide focused light for specific tasks or activities. Think under cabinet lights or floor lamps.
Accent lighting adds a little drama and is often used to highlight a specific element, such as wall-mounted picture lights.
When layered together throughout a room, they work to achieve a rich and flexible lighting design. Now, let’s dive into those trends.

Sustainability Will Always Be On Trend
Sustainability has been a large topic of discussion within all industries lately. And even though this subject is so much more than a trend, it's been amazing to see the emphasis put on products that really support the importance of eco-friendly living. For years the lighting industry has been contributing products that have worked to help homes become more sustainable while remaining stylish. Even looking beyond lights, products, such as ceiling fans, have become an effective way to keep cool in the summertime in an environmentally friendly way. Thankfully, sustainability will continue to influence the industry meaning practical products, like ceiling fans, will always be in style.
Tip: Opt for your lighting in cooler colour temperatures to help your space feel less ‘stuffy’, plus these bulbs will also work with a number of trends.

Nostalgic Lighting
Nostalgia has played a big role in this year's trends. We’re going to see this continued but in a more classic way. Think vintage lamps with stunning shades, chandeliers with timeless flair, and wall lights that will bring an original touch to your space. This trend will also be perfect for bringing in accent lighting, like wall-mounted picture lighting, what feels more classic than that?
Sculptural Pendants
We’re going to be seeing a lot of sculptural pendant lighting in 2024. Their purpose is to turn a practical piece into something artistic and create a visual impact within a room. Plus, these sculptural pendants come in all shapes, sizes, and styles making them a versatile piece.

Minimalist Lighting
A trend that will continue to stay strong over the next year is minimal lighting. Think chic, clean-lined pendants, simplistic floor lamps, and modern wall lights. This minimal trend is perfect for any space, whether your style is maximalist, coastal, or anywhere in between as it allows the lighting to highlight your home, rather than overcrowding it.
Trends Tip:
The colour temperature of your light will also play a key role when incorporating these trends. For example, warm light is used in a vast majority of homes to create a soft, relaxing ambience, perfect for nostalgic trends.

Smart Switches and Systems
Upcoming trends will have us installing smart lighting systems and switches in the home. These modern pieces add a level of automation and can also help contribute to your home’s sustainability. For example, some systems can be set to automatically turn lights off when leaving a room or even through voice control. As technology advances, we’ll see interior design further integrating with these smart systems.
