14 Master Bedroom Ideas for 2023

Your master bedroom is your inner most sanctum. It’s a place to retreat, relax, and rest. The bedroom needs to be your happy place, a reflection of you. So naturally it’s the place to unleash your creativity.

The trends in master bedroom design in 2023 are beginning to reflect that function. As a reaction to the COVID years, and as a rejection of the grey industrial designs of last decade, master bedrooms are becoming brighter, colourful, more spacious, and are connecting more with the natural environment. With climate change constantly on our minds, these spaces are becoming sustainable and eco-friendly, easing our worries.

To help you find inspiration here are 14 master bedroom ideas and trends we’re seeing in 2023.

1. A focus on comfort

Creating a calming retreat that improves the quality of our sleep is now a major trend. As a lesson from the pandemic years, we realised just how important having a comfortable space that we can retreat to really is. Emphasis is now placed on choosing quality furniture that’ll allow us to get the best night sleep possible. Whether that’s through a quality mattress in a more conventional rectangular shape, sculpted pillows, or calming décor.

Add to this the continued increase in the number of smart home devices. There are now even more nifty devices that can monitor and aid our quality of sleep. These include lights that minimise blue light in the evening, smart air conditioning that optimises room temperature as we sleep, or smart speakers that calm us as we sleep and slowly wake us in the morning.

2. Clean, green, and sustainable

Sustainability is a big topic on our minds. With Climate Change dominating the news cycle, we’re all wondering how we can do our part. That’s why there’s a trend to use more sustainable materials at home whenever possible.

This has a massive influence on the materials that can be used. Sustainable materials like ethical wood, glass, and stone are being chosen for furniture and fittings. Reused or recycled materials are appearing in décor. While organic fabrics, recycled materials, or sustainable fibres are making their way into bedding and cushions.

We're also loving sustainable flooring solutions, like Paris in the Plantino Engineered Oak Elemental range from Choices Flooring, as seen in this mood board.

3. Bringing the outside in

Intense lockdowns over the past three years have sparked a craving for nature. In response, a focus on highlighting the natural environment around us and reflecting it inside has become a major trend.

This has led to the rethink of window placement. Now designers are trying to frame the natural environment around the bedroom using windows. Importance has been put on highlighting views, with décor, wallpaper, and greenery placed to reflect the colours and plants of the natural environment seen through the window frame.

4. A focus on bolder colours

New, bolder colours are starting to see their way into the master bedroom. We want the bedroom to reflect ourselves, to act as a retreat where we can be our most comfortable. What better way to do this than to reflect ourselves through colour?

There’re many gorgeous colours making their way into 2023.

A touch of teal is versatile, providing the calming effect of cooler colours, while its hues of warmer colours add richness and warmth into the room. Burgundy adds a touch of luxury and elegance. A little bit of black adds space and depth to a room. Warming terracotta adds contrast and depth when used as an accent colour.

Try experimenting with a mixture of colours and see what you can create. Don’t be afraid to go bold this year. Our advice? Start with a blank canvas wall, like the Dulux Snowy Mountains, and add colour from there. We're taking our inspiration from Mulberry Manor's guest room.

5. Neutral colours are still in

Whites, creams, and to a lesser extent greys, are still all around in 2023. While not as dominant as they’ve been in the past, these colours still offer the perfect back drop to wild patterns and bold colours. These colours provide a calming effect, which makes them the perfect contrast to your bold colours, adding breathing space that lets your colourful side shine.

We're loving the neutral selections from Dulux, like White Dune Quarter and Whisper White.

6. Mixing bold patterns

Striking wallpapers, printed bedding, and graphic rugs are all a big part of the master bedroom trends in 2023. It’s time to make your master bedroom your own by choosing big, bright, and bold patterns that pop. You can use a single pattern, or experiment with a mixture of patterns to create something uniquely you.

7. Maximising light and space

Wide windows, lots of lamps, and well-placed lighting have all become essential this year. The past few years have shown us the importance of light and space in our bedrooms. They are no longer just a spot to sleep, but places where we retreat and rest.

Maximising the appearance of the size of the room is important. Fortunately, even a small room can look larger. Place some bright spotlights into the roof above, add a large window, and avoid placing carpet right to the edges of the room. Utilise a hard flooring and a rug to provide the illusion of space.

8. Plants are coming into the bedroom

Along with increasing views of the natural environment outside, we’re bringing nature into our master bedrooms. House plants are magical, somehow adding a sense of calm and vibrancy at the same time. There is just something relaxing about seeing all that green, our stress just melts away, which does wonders to our sleep. At the same time, plants come in all sorts of gorgeous colours and shapes that allow them to be a stunning centre piece to any room they’re in.

Try adding a few plants to your bedroom. There’re a lot of options and looking after most indoor plants is effortless.

9. Furniture is all about convenience

Who doesn’t love convenient storage that turns your bedroom into a clutter free environment? In 2023 our sleep quality is under the spotlight, meaning stressful, cluttered environments need to go.

We’re all now turning to clever furniture that offers convenient, and hidden storage. This’ll give you loads of storage (who doesn’t love more storage?) in the bedroom without covering it in wall-to-wall wardrobes. Fitted furniture is becoming more popular for this reason. It allows a tighter, more bespoke fit that provides a neater, sleeker appearance.

Try choosing furniture that has simpler door fronts with less detailing, neutral colours, and flush-fronted doors. In fact, take it a step further and remove handles entirely with push-to-open doors and soft close drawers.

10. Patterned curtains

With wide windows and an emphasis on natural light becoming the trend, you’re going to need some serious curtains. Blackout curtains are a great place to start for getting a great sleep all night long, but it depends on your preferred light level. Curtain thickness is the easy part, their design is where things get fun in 2023.

Patterned and bright curtains are making their way into master bedrooms, adding that touch of fun and personality we crave in our retreat spaces. Alternatively, if you prefer a more austere look then plain curtains in rich or neutral colours are still popular. Match it up with your favourite privacy curtain to keep prying eyes out without compromising on natural light.

11. Elegant headboards

The headboard continues to evolve each year. This year it’s time to put aside glossy monotoned textures, and instead pick up a colourful matte pattern. Your headboard is another space where you can run free, letting your creativity loose. Gone are the boring rectangles, and in are curves and free-form asymmetrical pieces.

The headboard is almost becoming an art piece in itself. Why not opt for something bold and eye-catching, like the Maeve Boucle Bed Head from James Lane. We promise this statement piece will take your master bedroom to the next level.

12. Statement pendant lights

Pendant lights are the stunning and functional replacement to bedside table lamps. Low hanging pendant lights look gorgeous and pair well with an upholstered bed. There are thousands of different designs available. Plus, these lights can be mixed and matched to fit any bedroom theme.

The practical benefit is that they free up a lot of table or desk space. This gives you more freedom with bedside table sizing and shape as you don’t need to fit a massive lamp.

13. Art Deco is coming back

Born from a period of optimism after the first world war and a pandemic in the 1920s came Art Deco. Now as we come out of our own pandemic, we are entering a new period of optimism for the future. So, Art Deco is back in its full glory. This glamorous style is beloved for its bold patterns, geometric lines, exaggerated curves, and gold accenting.

The return of Art Deco starts in the patterns and textiles we are using for headboards, bed linen and wallpaper. The style encompasses fun and playful, which are common themes in 2023.

14. Large art pieces as backdrops

Art can be deeply personal, which makes the master bedroom the perfect space for your favourite piece. The bedroom is our escape and retreat space, so framing this favourite piece of art as the backdrop of your room allows the space to better reflect you.

Make the art piece you choose your colour cue. Take two or three colours from the piece and extend them into the room. Experiment with these until you find what works for the room.
