A New Era of Architecture | Unveiling Brickworks' Brick of the Year
In Partnership With: Brickworks
Style Sourcebook Profile: Brickworks
Bricks are more than just a structural element to a home, they flaunt innovation behind each one. Brick by brick, they define the aesthetic of a home but also enhance its longevity and sustainability. Considering the production process, environmental footprint, and long-term contribution to the built environment, Brickworks’ Brick of the Year celebrates a standout material that reflects the evolving landscape of Australian architecture and design. Here at Style Sourcebook, this is something we are particularly excited about, showcasing endless possibilities for architects, designers, and homeowners. So, what stunning styles were in the line-up in 2025?
This year, there was an outstanding selection of bricks, which were judged on craftsmanship, sustainability, and their ability to complement both contemporary and heritage-inspired homes. Australia’s most respected architects were deliberating this year, including Madeleine Blanchfield of Madeleine Blanchfield Architects, Matt Gibson of Matt Gibson Architecture + Design, Kitty Lee of Kitty Lee Architecture, and Tanya Buchanan, Editor-in-Chief of Belle and Australian House & Garden.
Outstanding design comes from the right materials, and this was definitely the case with the 2025 winner. Introducing Artisan Wolf by Nubrik as Brickworks’ 2025 Brick of The Year. The warm, earthy tones are inspired by the Australian landscape, ensuring it feels at home whether used in a modern extension, a new build, or a carefully considered renovation. Sounds like a dream? This meticulous detail is what gave Nubrik’s ‘Artisan Wolf’ the Brick of the Year crown. With a refined texture, soft tonal variations, and seamless integration into a variety of architectural styles, Artisan Wolf embodies both design excellence and enduring appeal.
The panel didn’t stop there with praising the wonderful work of Artisan Wolf, highlighting the incredible balance of subtlety and character. Noting that it carries warm, natural tones with a refined nod to 1970s architecture, Matt Gibson described it as a brick that designers and homeowners will return to time and again. For any project, Artisan Wolf has the ability to ground it with texture, warmth, and tactility. Madeline Blanchfield joined in reinforcing the quality, as she described its nuanced texture and depth as creating a feeling of sophistication that is effortless yet deeply considered.
Understanding that there’s a growing global demand for natural, textural materials that stand the test of time, Artisan Wolf does just that. Tanya Buchanan shared that this reflects a broader shift towards materials that offer depth, dimension, and a connection to place. Recognising the way it enhances the broader streetscape, Kitty Lee emphasised its ability to bring cohesion to a neighbourhood, allowing new builds to sit comfortably alongside heritage homes and natural landscapes. She noted that there is an integrity to Artisan Wolf that makes it feel embedded within its surroundings rather than imposed upon them.
Congratulations from us to the winners of 2025 Brick of the Year. There’s no doubt that this year’s selection highlights the materials that will define Australian homes for years to come. The future of design is bright, and Brickworks’ Brick of the Year reinforces the enduring value of brick, perfect for a new build or a carefully considered renovation, to shape spaces in Australian homes.
