What is Parquetry/Herringbone flooring?

Parquet is a general term for patterned flooring made up of small, uniform blocks arranged in a geometric pattern. Herringbone is a type of parquet pattern where blocks are laid diagonally, creating zig-zag effect. In short, parquet is the flooring; herringbone is the pattern.

Other patterns within the parquet banner are chevron, basket weave, tramline and brick bond.

What are the key design benefits of choosing a parquet pattern over traditional plank flooring?

The aesthetic appeal is the largest benefit for a parquet pattern when compared to traditional straight-lay flooring as it allows you to create emphasis, balance and alignment, as well as contrast and proportion within your space. Parquet patterns are undeniably stunning and are a true symbol of luxury and opulence. With its timeless charm and warmth, parquet will never go out of style.

What should designers and renovators consider when selecting parquetry flooring for their projects?

  • Which pattern do you want to achieve: herringbone, chevron or tramline?
  • Do you wish to border the parquet with straight-lay planks?
  • Does it suit the space or function of the room or area?
  • Which size of plank do you prefer: small, medium or large?
  • Does your builder, contractor or installer have the skillset to lay it?
  • Have you selected the correct product for the area?
  • Is the space going to be used for commercial or residential purposes?

How do these flooring solutions fit in with current interior design trends?

Herringbone is not a new trend, but a timeless classic that never goes out of style. Currently, it is an increasingly popular choice as people are becoming more aware of sustainable and timeless design: “Design it Once, Design it Right”.

Are these flooring options suitable for high-traffic areas?

‘Camaro’ is suitable for residential high traffic areas. We would recommend ‘Expona Commercial’ for high traffic commercial areas.
