Designing a Functional Laundry Layout with ADP

In Partnership With: ADP

Style Sourcebook Profile: ADP

Like most spaces within your home, the goal is to create functionality. Aesthetics are always important, but your home should also enhance your everyday life, not hinder it. One of the more important places to prioritise functionality is the laundry. And often laundries are the room you want to spend the least amount of time in, so creating a practical space is key. So, if you’re looking to elevate your laundry’s functionality (while also not compromising on style), then we have the solution for you. Come with us as we sit down with ADP to discover how you can design a functional laundry layout.

Essentials Elements for Designing Your Functional Laundry Layout

We’ve put together a list of the essential elements needed for a functional laundry:

Storage: The more storage, the better. Storage is essential for decluttering and ensuring you have the space you need to put things away and free your benchtop from mess to use your laundry freely. Drawer cabinets and tall cabinets with shelving are the ultimate storage solutions, we also love utilising open shelves for easy to reach items.

Practicality:  Think about layout and how the space will function – placing a hamper cabinet right next to the washing machine is always a game changer and frees the floor from dirty clothes! One of our favourite products for amazing practicality is the Electric Clothes Hanger, perfect for apartment living or wet climates.

A Large Sink & Pull-Out Tap: A deep spacious laundry sink is going to give you more room for soaking, cleaning, and even bathtime for those furry loved ones. Combine with a Pull-Out Sink Mixer for easy cleaning and ultimate functionality you won’t regret.

Durability: Your layout and style will depend on how you use the space, but there’s one thing that should always be consistent in a laundry, durability. The products and pieces you choose should be good quality and made to last, you want your new laundry design to be with you for years to come.

Personalise Your Layout

To begin your new design, you have to understand how you use your laundry space. For example, identifying whether you’ll need more bench space, more airflow, or even integrated appliances, will give you a better understanding of what you’ll need from your layout. Our advice? Next time you’re in the laundry, notice the parts you love and the parts you’d change and make a list. This will enable your layout to fit perfectly into your routine.

Choosing Your Features

Deciding on the features of your laundry is essential to ensure you have enough space to fit everything in. It’s also important to not over-clutter your laundry with features, but instead choose ones that will seamlessly fit. We’re currently loving hampers hidden in cabinetry, ironing board drawers to free up storage space, and a built-in clothes hanger - especially if it's electric.

Plan Your Layout

Now it’s time to plan your layout. It’s always good to start by measuring the space and choosing the shape of your layout. The most common layouts are straight-run, L-shaped, and gallery laundries. The shape you choose will be determined by how much space you have to work with.

Tip: There are also a few key things to keep in mind such as the location of existing and future power points, the room needed for opening and closing windows and doors, and the size of your appliances.

Finalising Your Layout

No laundry would be complete without the final fittings and fixtures. We love how creating an aesthetically pleasing space makes a world of difference. So, don’t forget to choose your benchtops, cabinetry, and tapware to complement your new layout. We recommend matching the style of your home for cohesion.
